BNP chief Khaleda Zia to meet senior leaders over party council

Khaleda-(1)

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has called a meeting of the party’s highest policy-making body, the National Standing Committee, in connection with its upcoming council on Mar 19.

The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday evening at Khaleda’s Gulshan office, said BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

“The chairperson has convened the meeting to discuss overall preparations, including the finalisation of sub-committees for the council,” he told bdnews24.com.

The party is considering the Suhrawardy Udyan, Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) or the auditorium of the Engineers Institute, Bangladesh as possible venues for the conclave next month.

The Representation of the People Order (RPO) says political parties must hold councils every three years, but the last time the BNP held one was six years ago.

Khandker Delwar Hossain was made the secretary general in the last council held in December 2008.

Khaleda’s elder son, Tarique Rahman, too, was elevated to the post of the party’s senior vice-chairman in that council.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was made the acting secretary general after Hossain’s death in 2011.

Khaleda Zia has been the party’s chairperson since 1983. She started her career in politics after the death of her husband former president Ziaur Rahman in 1981.
