A tense situation was prevailing along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border on Sunday following the killing of Bangladesh Border Guard Nayek Mizanur Rahman in firing by Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP).

Although the Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP) on Saturday handed over the BGB member’s body, an uneasy calm was prevailing along the border over the incident, according to locals.

The body of Nayek Mizanur Rahman was taken to Naikhongchhari BGB-31 Battalion office around 12:30 pm today.

Earlier, on Saturday, the body was handed over to BGB at a flag meeting in Panchhari near the border pillar No. 52 around 5:45pm on Saturday. The body was kept at Lembuchhari BGB camp overnight.

BGB regional commander Brig Gen Sayed Ahmed Ali said his body will be taken to Cox’s Bazar General Hospital for postmortem today and then it will be sent to his home district Comilla for burial.

He said the BGB member’s family will be provided with Tk 5 lakh.

Mizan had gone missing amid indiscriminate firing by the BGP members along the Naikhonchhari border on Wednesday morning.

Later, a BGP officer confirmed that a member of the Border Guard Bangladesh was killed by his unit on Wednesday when a clash broke out between the two sides amid rising tension along the border.

After the incident, tension escalated along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border. It further intensified on Friday afternoon when BGP further fired gunshots along Panchhari border in Naikhonchhari.

Bangladesh summoned Myanmar Ambassador to Bangladesh Myo Myint Than for the second time on Saturday since May 28, and handed over a note verbal strongly protesting the unprovoked eruption of gunfire from the Myanmar border force along the Bangladesh-Myanmar international border on Friday afternoon.

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has been put on high alert along Bangladesh-Myanmar border as Myanmar authorities have reportedly deployed army at its outposts.
