At least 25 people were injured in a clash between two factions of BCL in Gopalganj city yesterday.

During the clash several office premises were vandalised in the city. Police had to fire 30 rounds of rubber bullets to disperse the agitators.

Among the injured, BCL Gopalganj unit President Abdul Hamid was admitted to Gopalganj 250 Bed General Hospital and its General Secretary Foysal Ahammed Bony, who was hit by a bullet, was sent to Khulna for better treatment.

Police and Chhatra League sources said the rivalry between the two groups started when a faction of BCL announced a committee for Kashiani upazila unit excluding the president and general secretary of BCL’s district unit.

Earlier, on September 22 BCL district unit’s president and general secretary formed three committees of BCL’s district unit, Gopalganj Sadar upazila unit and Bangabondhu University College unit.

The conflict reached its pick yesterday when the two groups brought out two separate rallies, which confronted each other around 11:30am in front of press club in Gopalganj city. Activists of the two groups attacked each other with sticks and brick chips.

Dr Md Ujjal, duty doctor at the emergency unit of Gopalganj 250 Bed General Hospital, said

one of the injured bore mark of bullet injury, but they could confirm it only after receiving the x-ray report.

Officer-in-Charge of Gopalganj Sadar police station Zakir Hossain Molla said the situation was under control and additional forces were deployed to the area.
