A 16-year-old Bangladeshi has been murdered at East London in the UK.
A bandana and hoodie-clad gang allegedly stabbed to death Ajmol Alam, a pupil with ‘a very bright future’, ‘in an unprovoked attack’ at around 9:50pm local time on Monday at Poplar.
Detective Police’s Chief Inspector Andy Chalmers said Ajmol was with a ‘peaceful group of fellow Bengalis’ when he was attacked.
He was a local boxer and had just finished his GCSE at Langdon Park School.
On information, police rushed to the scene and found two 16-year-old boys injured. Both were taken to an East London hospital. Ajmol was later pronounced dead.
Another Bangladeshi boy was stabbed through the cheek but his injury is not life-threatening.
Police have launched an investigation into the killing.
Chalmers, from the Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: “Ajmol was with his friend and doesn’t appear to have been doing anything to provoke this attack.”
“They were in Spey Street talking when they were confronted by five-six other male youths wearing bandanas and with their hoods up. The males attacked first his friend and then stabbed Ajmol in the upper thigh,” he added.
According to police, the motive of the murder was unknown and there was no indication that Ajmol was a gang member.
A 19-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday morning for this suspected involvement in the murder.
Chris Dunne, Head-Teacher at Langdon Park School, said Ajmol was a star pupil awaiting his GCSE results and had a ‘very bright academic future ahead of him’.
“He was a very, very splendid young man… Hard working, industrious, but also a very caring and thoughtful young man,” he said.
“The boy’s family are ‘completely devastated’,” he added.
Ohid Ahmed, Deputy Mayor and Ward Councillor for the area where the incident took place, said: “The murder of Ajmol is a tragic waste of a talented young life.”
