Ambassador to the United States Mohammad Ziauddin urged the US government to consider reinstating GSP facilities for Bangladesh at the ‘soonest possible opportunity.’
He made the request as he met Congressman Joseph Crowley, an influential Democrat Congressman and Co-chair of the Congressional Bangladesh Caucus in the House of Representatives on 17 September 2014 at his office in Capitol Hill, according to a message received in Dhaka on Thursday.
Ziauddin briefed the Congressman about the developments with regard to the worker’s rights and safety in the garment sector after the Rana Plaza incident in April 2013.
The ambassador hoped that since Bangladesh is working hard to comply with the US Actions Plan, the US government would consider reinstating GSP for Bangladesh soon.
He discussed the perspectives of holding the 10th national parliamentary elections in Bangladesh and said the government of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is working hard to bring qualitative changes in the lives of the people of the country.
As Ambassador Ziauddin and Congressman Crowley exchanged views on terrorism, Ziauddin said that it is utmost necessary to eliminate terrorism all over the world.
In this regard, he said that Bangladesh is doing its’ best to rid the country of this malice.
He appreciated the US role for robust partnership with Bangladesh to eliminate terrorism in all its’ form and manifestation.
Congressman Joseph Crowley welcomed the new ambassador, Mohammad Ziauddin, to the United States and hoped that during his tenure the existing excellent relations between two countries would further strengthen and reach to a higher level.
Nayem Uddin Ahmed, counsellor political of the embassy, accompanied the Ambassador during the meeting.
