Bangladesh-CERN cooperation

This will benefit universities, researchers and professionals.

Bangladesh Permanent Representative in Geneva M Shameem Ahsan signed the “instrument of cooperation” with CERN Director General Dr Rolf Heuer on Friday in Geneva, says the foreign ministry .

The move, it believes, is “a major step ” towards advancement of science and technology research in Bangladesh.

CERN runs world’s largest laboratory in fundamental and quantum physics in Geneva.

Its inventions and discoveries play a major role in the fight against deadly diseases like cancer. Recent discovery of Higg’s Boson – the ‘God particle’– drew global attention.

For countries like Bangladesh, it provides the opportunity for much needed technology transfer, education and training for researchers, scholars, academics and students.

It also offers programmes for students and researchers from developing countries — internship, summer and other specialised schools that are open to all.

The foreign ministry said this collaboration would facilitate research in experimental and theoretical particle physics.

The CERN Director General who had recently visited Bangladesh praised the efforts of the government for “taking the benefits of science and technology to the doorstep of the people”.

He assured CERN’s support in this effort and hoped that the teachers, students and researchers of Bangladesh would be “immensely benefit from this formal cooperation”.

CERN will conduct a high-level short training on advanced particle and quantum physics at Dhaka University from Dec 15 to Dec 18.

Professors from CERN, Belgium, and India will take classes during the training sessions.
