Bangla ballots in New York for US Elections 2016

The US Elections 2016 is historic for a number of reasons, the latest of which is the availability of voting ballots in Bangla.

This is the first instance of the Bangla language being used in an election in the United States. Bangladeshi immigrants populating the Jackson Heights neighbourhood in the Queens borough in New York City will avail the facility. The sight of the mother language on the ballot will certainly be an emotional factor in determining the future of the country by Bangladeshi-born voters. More importantly, it will play a large role in aiding people whose English skills are hindered.

The anti-immigration spew of hatred by Trump seem like it will strongly encourage Bangladeshi-Americans to vote for Clinton. Bangladeshi restaurateurs and students – immigrants and born in the USA alike – claimed that they have been facing racial discrimination since Trump’s maligning campaign. As history is being made in the United States that will either see a woman or a political outsider elected president of the United States and the free world, the Bangla language has become part of it.
