At least seven killed in ‘Operation Hit Back’

At least seven extremists were killed in the drive at a den of extremists at Nasirpur of Moulvibazar on Thursday.

Monirul Islam, head of Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crimes unit of police, at a briefing in Moulvibazar said seven to eight people died in sucidal explosions and their bodies tore apart. ‘So, actiual number of the victims it is yet to be confirmed, he said.

He said operation at Nasirpur was over and now crime-scene unit was working there.

Earlier, sporadic gunshots and explosions were heard as the joint forces resumed drive at Nasirpur extremist den of sadar upazila in Moulvibazar after being halted for bad weather since early morning on Thursday.

Moulvibazar’s superintendent of police Md Shahjalal said the SWAT team reached at the spot around 10:30am.

Sound of sporadic gunshots and explosions were heard from the scene after 11:00pm as SWAT team resumed the ‘Operation Hit Back’ at Nasirpur extremist den, our local correspondent reported.

The law enforcers also encircled the other ‘extremist den’ at Barhat in Moulvibazar municipality area.

Manirul Islam, chief of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit, said after carrying out operation in Nasirpur village, they would launch operation in Borhat area.

Earlier, the joint team comprising members of Special Weapons and Tactics, Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit, Rapid Action Battalion, and district police suspended the operation codenamed ‘Operation hit back’ due to heavy rain that started since early morning.

The joint forces launched the operation at the ‘extremist hideout’ at Nasirpur on Wednesday evening.

Meanwhile, the local administration shut down all the educational institutions in and around the spots for ensuring the security of civilians, police said.

Besides, police evacuated the residents of the area safely.

On the other hand, the local administration imposed Section 144 in Barhat area and within a 2-km radius of the ‘extremist den’ at Nasirpur.

Detectives identified the ‘extremist den’ of Barhat keeping close watch on the house for three days and gathering information about the tenants.

Earlier, 10 people, including four extremists and two police officials, were killed and at least 40 people injured during the 83-hour long operation, ‘Twilight’, at Atia Mahal, said army’s military intelligence director Brig Gen Fakhrul Ahsan.
