We are looking into the authenticity of the al-Qaeda video message, says the state minister for home affairs
The government’s official reaction over al-Qaeda’s threat to Bangladesh will be availbe on Friday, State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said.
Following al-Qaeda’s announcement of forming its Indian subcontinent wing, reporters sought the government’s reaction in this regard.
While talking to the reporters on Thursday, minister Kamal said the government will announce on Friday what steps would be taken against al-Qaeda’s formation of its wing in India and its neighbourhood.
“We are looking into authenticity of the al-Qaeda video message,” he said.
Informing that the government has taken the matter seriously, Kamal said: “We have been working on curbing militancy for a long time.”
In a video posted online, Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri announced the formation of a wing of the militant group in India and its neighbourhood.
Zawahri said the Indian wing “would rescue” Muslims in Bangladesh, along with other places in the subcontinent, from “injustice and oppression”.
The fresh announcement of al-Qaeda came six months after its call to Bangladeshi Muslims to join jihad. The previous call was made in an audio message which was released on mid-January.
