Kishoreganj

The ruling Awami League on Monday nominated Rejwan Ahmed Toufiq, the eldest son of President Abdul Hamid, as its candidate to contest the Kishoreganj-4 by-polls slated for July 3.

The decision came from a meeting of the Awami League Parliamentary Board (ALPB) held at Prime Minister’s official residence Ganobhaban.

ALPB Chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the hour-long meeting that began at 9 pm.

Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam briefed reporters after the meeting.

He said the 10-member ALPB unanimously picked up Toufiq for the by-election to Kishoreganj-4 constituency.

ALPB members Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed, Suranjit Sengupta, Obaidul Quader, Dr Alauddin Ahmed and Syed Ashraful Islam were, among others, present at the meeting.

“The party leaders from Kishoreganj selected Toufiq as their candidate for the by-election,” Ashraf said, adding that only one person collected the nomination form and submitted it for the by-polls.

The Election Commission on May 22 announced that the by-polls to Kishoreganj-4 constituency (Itna-Mithamain and Astagram) would be held on July 3.

According to the schedule, the last date for submitting nomination papers is June 6, while that for withdrawal of candidature is June 17. The nomination papers will be scrutinised on June 9.

Mymensingh district’s senior election officer Jahid Hossain will act as the Returning Officer to be assisted by three other district assistant election officials.

A total of 279,719 voters will cast their votes in 118 polling centres under 24 union councils of the constituency.

The Kishoreganj-4 parliamentary seat fell vacant as the MP from the constituency Speaker Abdul Hamid was elected President of the country on April 22.
