AL leader sues MP Rony

Both cases were filed with Golachipa Police Station on Sunday night naming Rony as the prime accused. One of the cases was filed by a local Awami League leader.

Altogether 71 people, including Rony’s brother-in-law Md Mokbul Khan, Chairman of Dakua Union Parishad in Golachipa Upazila, were accused in the cases.

Two journalists – reporter Imtiaz Momin Sony and cameraman Mohsin Mukul – of the private Independent TV came under attack at Rony’s Meherba Plaza office on Topkhana Road on July 20 when they had gone there to interview the MP for their investigative programme ‘Talash’.

Later that day, a case was filed against the Patuakhali-3 MP with the Shahbagh Police Station, in which he was sent to jail.

Meanwhile, Golachipa Police Station OC Md Ziaul Haque on Monday told bdnews24.com that one of the cases was lodged by Upazila Awami League unit Organising Secretary Md Shamsuzzaman Likhon.

The case details said Rony led his cadres in assaulting people, vandalising shops and loot while attacking a rally of Panpotti Union Awami League unit on Aug 17, 2010.

Altogether 42 people were accused, of them 17 have been named, Haque said.

The other case was filed by Md Badrul Islam Khan, a resident at the Upazila’s Dakua Union, accusing 29 people, 11 of them have been named.

Quoting the case details, the OC said Rony, his brother-in-law Mokbul Khan and other accused had attacked Khan on Mar 25, 2012. They have been trying to extort Tk 500,000 from him.

It said the attackers had snatched Tk 36,700 and three mobile phones from Khan at the time.
