ACC to enquire wealth of 6 AL leaders

Wealth statements to be enquired on seven AL candidates

Anti corruption commission (ACC) has decided to begin an enquiry into the wealth statements of the ruling party candidates, who participated in the 10th general elections.

The approval came from a regular meeting of the ACC on Wednesday afternoon.

Pranab kumar Bhattacharya, public relations officer of the ACC told the Dhaka Tribune: “The commission has appointed seven investigation officers to enquire the wealth statements that included with the affidavits of Awami League candidates.”

The candidates, whose wealth will be enquired, are Abdur Rahman Badi (Cox’s Bazar 4), AFM Ruhul Haquw (Satkhira 3), Mahbubur Rahman (Patuakhali 4), Engineer Enamul Haq (Rajsahi 4), Aslamul Haque (Dhaka 14), Abdul Mannan (Dhaka 1) and Abdul Zabbar.

Of them, Abdul Zabbar was an former Jatiya Party MP.

Earlier, several reports had been published in media on the wealth statements of the AL candidates soon after the Election Commission published their affidavits on its website.

The reports showed that many of them had amassed sizeable fortunes while in office during the last five years.

Later on December 23 last year, the Awami League requested the EC to stop publishing the affidavits on its website.

In reply, the EC said it would review the related law to stop publishing the affidavits submitted by candidates of the January 5 elections.

On December 24, the official website of the Election Commission started acting up.

It was observed that if any visitor went to the EC website http://www.ecs.gov.bd/Bangla/ to check the cndidate disclosure of the ruling Awami League link it takes more time than it did before.

However, while randomly checking the site, it was noticed that the site works normally when checking to see the affidavits of candidates from other parties, especially those who have not participated in earlier elections.
