The central bank chief has said Bangladesh is making considerable progress despite the global recession.
“Bangladesh will become a middle-income nation by 2020 if it maintains the current economic growrth,” Bangaldesh Bank Governor Atiur Rahman said at a training workshop in Sylhet on Sunday.
He said the country had achieved a 6.26 percent growth in the past four years whereas the average global growth was a mere 3 percent.
Rahman said the poverty rate also came down during the time.
“The poverty rate has dropped below 27 percent,” he said. “On average, poverty has decreased by 2 percent over the past four years.”
“Around 22 million people have climbed out of poverty in the past two decades,” the Governor further said.
