The government has put the last nail on the coffin of judiciary by moving to empower the parliament to impeach Supreme Court judges, the BNP said today.
“The government intends to establish full control over the judiciary for obstruct its independence, the party’s acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said at a rally at the Jatiya Press Club.
The cabinet on August 8 approved the proposal for amendment of constitution to pave the way for restoring the parliament’s authority to impeach the Supreme Court judges for misconduct or incapacity.
Addressing the rally organised by BNP-led 20-party alliance today, Fakhul came down heavily on the government, saying the amendment aims at preventing judges from giving their “prudent” verdicts.
If judges are accused of misconduct, how could the incumbent parliament can impeach them? he asked, terming the parliament “illegal”.
Referring to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s claim of Zia family’s involvement in the August 15, 1975 massacre of Bangabandhu and August 21, 2004 grenade attack, he said: “She drew criticism due to her unreasonable remarks.”
On BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman’s statement in London where he termed the Mujib family “a curse for the country”, Fakhrul said it was a “tit for tat”.
He also lambasted the government move to train Border Guard Bangladesh members on border management by Indian Border Security Force.
“You [countrymen] can assume the situation when you accept training from those from whom you are supposed to remain alert to protect the border,” he said.
