Congratulating the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on its landslide victory in the Lok Sabha election, BNP on Friday hoped that the new government in New Delhi will take initiatives for resolving various long-pending bilateral issues like Teesta Water sharing and border killings.
“We (BNP) think democracy has triumphed through this victory. We congratulate BJP (on its winning majority seats in the Lok Sabha polls). We also expect the neighbouring country to work to build good relations with Bangladesh,” said BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Addressing a rally at the Jatiya Press Club in the city, the BNP spokesperson also said, “We believe India’s new government will try to read the minds of the Bangladesh people. They’ll come forward and take steps to resolve various unresolved (bilateral) issues like putting an end to border killings and due share of common rivers, including the Teesta.”
The rally was organised in protest against the filing of ‘false’ cases against BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and its senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman as well as shifting the trial court conducting cases against them.

Preliminary results of the Indian national elections showed that Narendra Modi and his party has drove the long-dominant Congress party out of power in the most commanding victory India has seen in more than a quarter century.
BJP captured a commanding lead for at least 272 seats in the lower house of Parliament, the majority needed to form a government without a coalition with smaller parties.
However, the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, Modi, during his campaigns for polls, had threatened to deport illegal immigrants from the neighbouring country if his party won the Lok Sabha elections.
Referring to Narayanganj seven-murder incident, Fakhrul alleged that the government is not arresting the three Rab officials who were sent on forced retirement for their alleged involvement in the incident to save themselves.
BNP leaders Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Fazlul Haque Milon and Khairul Kabir Khokan, among others, addressed the rally presided over by party joint secretary general Amanullah Aman.
