State Minister for Science and Technology Yeafesh Osman on Saturday said the proposed nuclear power plant in Pabna will be a blessing for the new generation.

“This plant will produce cheaper electricity,” he said while addressing the inauguration of a photo exhibition on nuclear power plant at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Novo Theater at Bijoy Sharani in the city.

The Russian state corporation — Rosatom and the Novo Theater — jointly arranged the exhibition, titled ‘Energy of Future Generations’, on different nuclear power plants across the world developed by the Russian company.

Russian Ambassador Alexander A Nikolaeve and Prime Minister’s Secretary Abul Kalam Azad also spoke on the function.

Rosatom has been awarded a contract by the Bangladesh government to build a 2000MW nuclear power plant at Rooppur, Ishwardi in Pabna.

Yeafesh Osman said the proposed nuclear power plant will be safer one as there will be a five-layer protection to avert any accident. “The technology has changed enough than ever before, making things safer.”

He said Russia will take back the nuclear wastes of Rooppur power plant which will free Bangladesh from the hazard of nuclear waste management.

The state minister claimed that the government has been maintaining the highest transparency in the project. “We’ve set up the nuclear information centre in Dhaka to inform people about the every step of project’s development. Despite that, some quarters are creating confusions about the project,” he said.

Yeafesh Osman said the government has taken steps to create technical manpower to handle nuclear matters in the future. Dhaka University has opened a new department on nuclear science which will get assistance from different universities in Russia.

He said the Bangladesh government will provide only 10 percent of the project cost while Russia the rest as loan.
