‘Is Hasina JP chairman?’

Terming the Prime Minister’s remarks about its chairperson devoid of political norms, BNP on Friday said if Khaleda Zia is the Ameer (chief) of Jamaat-e Islami than Sheikh Hasina is the chairman of Jatiya Party.

“The Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina mentioned BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia as the Ameer of Jamaat-e Islami. If so, I can say she (Hasina) has apparently become the chairman of Jatiya Party after keeping its chief HM Ershad at CMH following his polls boycott announcement,” said BNP leader Asaduzzaman Ripon.

Ripon, the party’s international affairs secretary, made the remarks at a press briefing arranged at its Nayapaltan central office to give the party’s reaction to the Prime Minister’s ‘objectionable’ remarks about Khaleda.

Earlier on Thursday, addressing at a rally at Noapara Shankar Pasha High School ground in Jessore, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia to refrain from getting involved in any ‘terrorist acts and militancy’.

Hasina also termed BNP leader Khaleda Zia the current Ameer of Jamaat.

Sharply reacting to the Prime Minister’s remarks, Ripon said, “The premier’s remarks are deplorable. We want to say those who attacked minorities belong to the ruling party. She can’t hide this shifting the blame onto Jamaat. The prime minister’s remark is devoid of political etiquette.”

The BNP leader said though they have an electoral alliance with Jamaat, there is huge difference between the ideologies and principles of the two parties.

Ripon, also an ex-president of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, criticised the government for what he said its growing repression and oppression on the opposition.

He alleged that the ruling party cadres has either ransacked or torched their around 131 offices across the country after the January 5 ‘farcical’ elections.

“The crackdown launched centring the elections still continues. The joint forces in the name of drive are raiding the houses of opposition leaders and harassing them and their family members,” the BNP leader added.

Mentioning that the tenure of the 9th parliament ended only on January 24, Ripon alleged that those became MPs through a so-called and vote-less polls have violated the constitution by taking oath before dissolving it.

He warned: “If any mobile court conducts drives, the illegal passengers who boarded on the January 5 election train without tickets could face fine or jail. People didn’t give mandate to form any government in the polls. So, the new regime is illegal.”

The BNP leader urged the government to reach an understanding with them through talks for taking the country forward by holding a free, fair and inclusive election.

  1. She is elder sister for playful Ershad. They are peas in the same pod. Let’s give a big hand to the brother and the sister.

  2. We have often heard Hasina asking Khaleda to go to Pakistan with her bag and baggages (Jamaat and others) and a thought came to my mind. Why don’t we, the people, ask both Hasina and Khaleda to leave us alone for a peaceful life and just go – Khaleda to Pakistan and Hasina to her beloved Bharat motherland? Then we can put Ershad behind bars for the rest of his useless life for killing Manzur. How about it guys?
