The BNP will soon realise that it was ‘foolish’ not to take part in the 10th national election, Awami League Presidium Member Obaidul Quader has said.
“The Opposition will soon realise they were unwise to have missed the election train,” said Quader on Tuesday at an Awami League party meeting held at its office on Bangabandhu Avenue.
The ruling Awami League was re-elected to Parliament with a clear majority in Sunday’s election boycotted by the 18-party alliance.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had told the the media at Ganabhaban on Monday that BNP chief Khaleda Zia had lost both ways by sitting out the polls.
Hasina urged her to severe her ties with the Jamaat-e-Islami and work to reach an agreement for the next election.
“The election train has reached its destination despite the BNP and the Jamaat’s efforts to derail it,” said Quader, referring to the violence before and after the polls.
He told Opposition leaders to give up hostilities, obviating the need for a ‘hard-line’ approach.
Quader said the parties whose leaders and activists had worked tirelessly for the election will be valued in the government.
He, however, felt that ‘some decisions’ would have to be taken about their weaknesses too.
“It’s unfortunately true that while leaders have increased, the number of workers have dropped.”
He criticised party leaders saying, these days they were shy of working at the ground level.
The extended meeting was held at the party office to plan the Jan 10 public rally at Suhrawardy Udyan to commemorate the day Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman returned to Bangladesh in 1972.
