A 55-feet long ancient tunnel has been discovered while digging a pond at Nurullahpur village under Ishwardi upazila in Pabna on Monday.
The tunnel along with a square area like house has been discovered from under 25-feet of the surface at one Khairul Islam’s pond.
The owner of the pond Khairul Islam said: “Digging work has been underway on my land for the past several days. On Monday, the day labourers found the tunnel and the house-like structure and informed us.”
The locals guessed that the discovery could be the remnants of an indigo warehouse from the British colonial period.
However, the district administration did not make any specific comment in this regard.
After being informed about the discovery, Ishwardi UNO Sanwar Hossain visited the spot. He said: “We have deployed police at the site to protect the structure and the next step will be taken as per the rule.”
Out of curiosity, several locals went into the tunnel with torches to see where it leads.
One Selim Mridha said: “I went inside the tunnel and took a measurement. It is about 55-feet long.”
Pabna is one of the districts, where indigo was forcefully cultivated during the British reign.

Good news about this discovery. Now we can ship all the top polticians of the country into the tunnel and close both the entrances (may be). May be there will be peace then in the country.
