Pro-govt quarter conspiring against Hefajat

Leaders of Hefajat-e-Islam on Thursday accused a pro-government quarter of conspiring against Jamiatul Ulum Al Islamia Madrasah in the city’s Lalkhan Bazar area and the Islamist group over Monday’s blast in the madrasah.

“A group is engaged in conspiracies against the Lalkhan Bazar Madrasah. The group is spreading fairytale of making grenades and bombs inside the madrasah in order to grab its lands worth crores of taka,” they said.

Hefajat leaders came up with the remark at a press conference at a Hathazari Community Centre in the district.

At least seven people were wounded in a ‘mysterious’ explosion in a room on the 1st floor of the four-storey hostel at Lalkhan Bazar.

Of the injured, two succumbed to their injuries on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Police filed two cases against Hefajat leader Mufti Izharul Islam and his son Harun Bin Izhar in connection with the incident.

Later, law enforcers recovered four handmade grenades from the dormitory of the madrasah where the blast took place and eighteen bottles of picric acid, bomb-making materials from the office of Mufti Izharul, the principal and founder of the madrasah.

Terming the recovery of grenades and bombs as a drama staged by the police at the behest of the government high-ups, Hefajat leaders questioned how live grenades remain unexploded at a burned site.

Reading out a written statement, Hefajat office secretary Azizul Haque Islamabadi demanded judicial inquiry into the madrasah blast.

Hefajat leaders Mawlana Shamsul Islam, Hafez Mawlana Tajul Islam, Selim Ullah Khan, Abdur Rahman Chowdhury were, among others, present.
