BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said resisting the government from holding a unilateral election under a partisan administration is now the main target of the opposition.
“Now our only target is to take every necessary preparation to thwart the government’s plan to return to power through holding the election under a party government,” he said.
The BNP spokesman came up with the remark while addressing an extended meeting of Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal at a city hotel.
Around 500 representatives of the voluntary wing of BNP took part in the daylong extended meeting.
Fakhrul alleged that the government is making various evil-designs to hold the polls unilaterally. “They’re even trying to create a rift among us. We want to say equivocally that no conspiracy will work.”
Reiterating his party’s demand for restoration of the caretaker government system to oversee the next polls, the BNP spokesman warned that they will topple this regime through a harsher movement if it does not accept the demand by October 24.
Fakhrul also called upon the party leaders and activists to get united putting behind previous conflicts and differences of opinions to wage a strong movement after October 24.
The BNP leader also alleged that the government is conspiring to keep the main opposition party out of the election race. “The government is sketching out every possible design to keep BNP away from the election race as it has understood that it has no chance to return to power through a free and fair election participated by all parties.”
Referring to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s announcement to form All-party Sangram Committees’ across the country, Fakhrul said, “Desh Netri (Khaleda) has already asked us to form polling station-based Sangram Committee to thwart a lopsided election. So, our main concern is not election but ousting the government. Once this regime is out, then we’ll think about election.”
Addressing a public rally in Sylhet on Saturday, opposition leader Khaleda Zia said polling-centre-based All-Party Sangaram committees will be formed across the country to resist the government move to hold a unilateral national election.
The BNP leader said a free, fair and credible election is not possible under this government as it as has politicised every institution, including the administration and the judiciary.
