AL candidate Rimon wins Barguna-2 by-polls

 

Ruling Awami League candidate Shawkat Hasanur Rahman Rimon was unofficially declared winner in the by-polls to Barguna-2 constituency held on Thursday.

 

Returning officer of the election Mostafa Faruk announced the results of the by-election at the deputy commissioner’s office at 10pm in presence of the participating candidates, their supporters and journalists.

 

As per the results announced, Rimon bagged 65,813 votes while his nearest candidate Golam Sarwar Hiru of Islami Andolon Bangladesh polled 57,993 votes.

 

Election officials said the voter turn-out was 54 percent in the election.

 

Earlier, the voting started at 8.00am amid tight security and continued until 4.00pm without any break in 528 booths of 96 polling stations.

 

Required number of law enforcers, including police, Rab and Ansar, were on security duty at every polling station.

 

There were also members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) as striking force and 19 mobile courts to maintain law and order.

 

The by-election was held with the updated electoral rolls of the constituency at the end of the current parliament, which is supposed to be dissolved on or after October 24 next as per the Constitution.

 

The parliamentary seat, comprising Patharghata, Bamna and Betagi upazilas, fell vacant following the death of ruling Awami League MP Golam Sabur Tulu who was killed in a road accident in Faridpur on July 26.

 

There was a legal obligation for the Election Commission to hold the by-election by October 23 as the article 123 (4) of the Constitution states, ”Election to a seat of the Parliament, upon its falling vacant for a specific reason, must be held within ninety days of the occurrence of the vacancy.”
