BNP standing committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan on Friday accused the government of trying to snatch people’s democratic rights in the name of following the constitution.
“Constitution is for people but people are not for constitution. The charter can be amended any time in the interest of the country and its people. But the government is trying to snatch people’s democratic rights on the pretext of following the constitution,” he said.
Moyeen came up with the allegation while addressing a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club.
Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Samobay Dal, a pro-BNP body, arranged the discussion on the constitution and the next election with its convener Principal Nur Afroz Begum Jyoti in the chair.
The senior BNP leader warned the government they will not allow it to snatch people’s right to vote.
Mentioning that the people of the country are passing their days in deep uncertainty and panic, he said no one knows where the country will head for in the next three months.
He alleged that the government scrapped the caretaker government system from the national charter to prolong its power. “The ruling party had established the non-party caretaker government system through a movement. Now they themselves killed the small child of democracy by putting it on fire.”
Justifying the opposition’s demand for arranging the next polls under a non-partisan government, Moyeen said mistrust among the political parties has deepened much more than in the past. “So, the national election won’t be acceptable if it’s held under a partisan government.”
He claimed that people through the elections to five city corporations sent out a strong message they will not accept any election unless it is held under a non-party administration. “The country’s people want to see a free and fair national election under a non-party caretaker administration.”
