PM to blame for indecency in Parliament: Fakhrul

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has blamed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for the recent indecent remarks by several MPs in Parliament.

The BNP’s Acting Secretary General made the comments amid a raging controversy over rude remarks over the past few weeks.

“The Leader of Parliament is to be blamed for everything. It is just a reflection of how she (Hasina) speaks,” he told media on Tuesday at a programme in Sylhet.

He made the remark when asked for a comment on the recent use of impolite language in Parliament which drew criticism from several quarters, including some of the lawmakers.

Fakhrul called upon the Prime Minister to pull the House out of the current situation and set a fresh trend.

He was speaking during a visit to the house of newly-elected Mayor of Sylhet City Corporation Ariful Haque Chowdhury.

The BNP-backed candidate defeated his rival Awami League-supported aspirant Badaruddin Ahmed Kamran by a huge margin in June 15 elections.

Fakhrul said though the local body elections under the current government were fair, it did not mean the same would happen during the national elections.

“Local elections do not affect the government. But a national ballot changes a government. That is why the parliamentary elections must be held under a neutral body.”

The Awami League-led ruling coalition has been denouncing opposition demands for a caretaker government stating it was unconstitutional.

On the other hand, the BNP-led opposition has been claiming that only a caretaker government can ensure free and fair general elections.

“The BNP will not go to elections under a partisan government,” Fakhrul reiterated his party stand.

“The city polls show the people’s lack of trust in this government,” he added.

Later, the BNP leader offered his prayers at Sylhet’s Hazrat Shahjalal and Hazrat Shahparan’s shrines.
