Switzerland will provide a grant of CHF 9.3 million (equivalent to Tk 75.75 crore) to install 50,000 improved household latrines, 250 community latrines covering around one million people, under the ‘Hygiene, Sanitation and Water Supply (HYSAWA) Programme in Bangladesh’.

The Ambassador of Switzerland to Bangladesh, Dr Urs Herren and the Secretary to the Economic Relations Division, Ministry of Finance, Md Abul Kalam Azad, have signed the deal on behalf of the respective sides, said a Swiss Embassy release.

The objective of the HYSAWA Programme is to support improved and sustainable public service delivery at the grassroots level. The programme particularly lays emphasis on empowering local government institutions to plan and manage hygiene, sanitation and water supply service delivery in an effective manner.

It targets to install 50,000 new or improved household latrines, 250 public latrines and more than 5,400 new water points in 50 Union Parishads covering around one million people.

The programme is being implemented by the HYSAWA Fund, a multi-stakeholder funding mechanism under the supervision of the Local Government Division of Bangladesh.

Switzerland is a longstanding development partner of Bangladesh. Bangladesh has been a priority country for Switzerland’s international development cooperation since the 1970s.
