Police arrest Awami League leader with suspected links to wife’s murder in Chandpur
Police have arrested a local leader of Awami league suspected of killing his wife, another Awami League leader in Chandpur.
Police recovered Fancy’s body at around 11pm on Monday from her residence in Shologhar Mosque neighbourhood, said Chandpur Central Model Police Station chief Wali Ullah Oli.
“We assume she died of severe head injuries. We are yet to identify the perpetrators, but her husband Advocate Zahirul Islam has been detained for interrogation,” he said.Fancy’s siblings alleged that Zahirul, who married another woman about five years ago, has killed her.
Advocate Zahirul Islam is joint-secretary of Chandpur district wing of Awami League and former president of District Lawyers Association.
“I was not at home and found the bedroom door open when I returned; Fancy was lying in a pool of blood on the floor. Then people rushed in as I screamed,” he told journalists before getting arrested.
Both Zahirul and Fancy hail from Maishadi Union in Chandpur. They got married in 1986. Two of their three daughters live abroad while a third studies in Cumilla Medical College.
Zahirul married Julekha without Fancy’s permission which created a dispute in the family, Fancy’s brother Md Naimur Rahman Khan told journalists.“We want exemplary punishment,” said Naimur Rahman, also principal of Shologhar Ideal High School.
“Zahirul informed us at around 11pm and we found our sister’s blooded body lying on the floor when we reached,” said Forkan Ahmed, another brother of Fancy.
“We have visited the scene and following the case,” said Additional Superintendent of Police Md Mizanur Rahman.
