3 Other Murderers

Rashidul Hasan

Through interviewing eyewitnesses, The Daily Star has learnt the identities of three more Chhatra League activists who were involved in the killing of Bishwajit Das.

Earlier on Tuesday, this paper published a story headlined “Of The Murderers,” identifying five BCL cadres of Jagannath University (JnU) who directly took part in the murder of the 24-year-old tailor.

The three identified yesterday are all fourth-year students at JnU. They along with the group of 10-12 BCL cadres swooped on Bishwajit with sticks, iron rods and machetes around 9:00am on Sunday when he was walking to his work, witnesses told this correspondent.

“Bishwajit was bleeding profusely. And when some people tried to stop the attackers, they said Bishwajit was a Shibir activist. Bishwajit then told them, ‘brother I am not a Shibir man. I am Hindu, I am Hindu.’ But his voice was so feeble and the killers continued beating and hacking him,” said Anisul, a roadside vendor.

In the last three years, these unruly Chhatra League men committed various crimes, including extortion, mugging and stalking female students of the university. But thanks to their connection with the ruling Awami League, police never took any action against them.

The trio could not be contacted for their comments.
