State Minister Chumki visits slain Sylhet child Rajan’s family, promises justice

She met the family in their house at Badeali village in Sadar Upazila’s Kandigaon Union on Wednesday.

She handed over Tk 100,000 in assistance to Rajan’s father Azizur Rahman.

Chumki said the district administration would provide Rajan’s brother Samiul Alam Sajan Tk 2,000 every month from now on for educational expenses.

Later, she told reporters the trial of Rajan’s killers would be finished as soon as possible.

“Everyone is shocked by this barbaric incident. Maximum punishment will be ensured to those involved in Rajan’s murder,” the state minister added.

She said a special tribunal to try such cases was also on the cards.

Rajan’s father and mother Lubna Aktar thanked the prime minister and the home minister for the quick arrests of the assailants.

Several men at Kumargaon brutally beat Rajan to death on July 8 on suspicion of theft. One of the assailants had filmed the gory torture and later released it on the internet.

The 28-minute video clip created a storm of criticism on the social media after it went viral.

Since then, different organisations across Bangladesh have been demonstrating demanding maximum punishment for the killers.

Jalalabad police had filed a case over the murder accusing four men.

They are Muhit Alam, his brother Saudi Arabian expatriate Kamrul Islam, their accomplices Haider Ali and local watchman Moyna Mia.

Of them, police have arrested Alam and Moyna from Sylhet. The duo and another person are currently on police remand in the murder case.

Local police in Jeddah also nabbed Islam.

But Ali is still on the run.

Sylhet police have also detained five others for questioning in connection with the murder.

Jalalabad police arrested another person on Wednesday from Kumargaon’s Sheikhparha.

They said Dulal Miah took part in torturing Rajan and was spotted in the video.
