People don’t believe polls to be fair under AL: Mosharraf

BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Wednesday said people do not believe that the next election under the Awami League-led government will be fair.

“Awami League is a party which killed democracy. So, people don’t believe a free and fair national election can be held under its rule,” he said.

Mosharraf, also a former BNP minister, came up with the remark at a discussion on caretaker government at the Jatiya Press Club arranged by Bangladesh Youth Forum, a pro-opposition body.

He alleged that the government brought the 15th amendment to the constitution without taking public opinion. “Scrapping the caretaker government system was not there in their election manifesto. Getting isolated from people, they amended the constitution as per their whim to return to power.”

Claiming that the opposition’s demand for arranging the next polls under a non-party caretaker government turned into a mass demand, the BNP leader said they will not allow the current regime if it tries to hold a one-sided election using their muscle power.

People want to get rid of the present government’s misrule, Mosharraf said, adding that the country’s people want a free and fair election under a non-party administration to establish a pro-people government.

“Still, there’s time, arrange the next polls under a non-party government. Or else, people will realise their demand through a harsher movement,” he warned.
