The district unit of the ruling Awami League wants Prime Minister’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy to contest the next general election from parliamentary seats under the district.

The AL unit also expects Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to formally announce that Joy will be a party candidate either from Rangpur-6 (Pirganj upazila) or Rangpur-3 (Sadar upazila).

Ruling party leaders and activists came up with the desire while addressing a press conference arranged at the local press club on Monday, ahead of the premier’s visit to Pirganj upazila on Wednesday.

Awami League district unit acting president Momtaz Ali and general secretary advocate Rezaul Islam Razu, among others, spoke at the press conference.

Earlier, Rangpur district Awzmi League awarded Joy the party membership in 2010. Since then, local leaders and activists have been advocating for Joy to take over the charge of the party.

Joy and his sister Saima Wazed Putul will accompany their mother Sheikh Hasina during her Pirganj visit.
