Prime Minister’s son Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed Joy has promised health centres in every village and university in every district if the Awami League is voted to power again.
He also pledged to take power to every house, free Bangladesh of poverty by 2021 and bring unions under fibre-optic cable network to build a ‘digital Bangladesh’.
Joy made these commitments on Friday while addressing street rallies during his trip to Gopalganj from Dhaka.
He is on a two-day visit to the country’s southern part to drum up support for the Awami League in the upcoming general election.
The young technology expert said around 14,000 health centres had been established during the last four and a half years of the Awami League-led government.
“If the Awami League is voted to power again, every village will have health centre from where people will get health facilities for free,” he said.
Joy said the Awami League-led government had set up around 4,500 union information centres that were offering various services including the distribution of government forms. “We’ll take fibre-optic cables to unions for expansion of Internet facilities.”
The Prime Minister’s son said the poverty rate had now dropped to 26 percent from 41 percent five years back. He claimed that not a single person had died of Monga (seasonal poverty in the northern part of the country) under the present government.
“We’ll free Bangladesh from poverty by bringing down the poverty rate to zero percent within our Vision-2021.”
Highlighting the load-shedding situation during the previous BNP-led Four-Party Alliance government, “Joy said the country used to be under load-shedding for half the day at that time. We’ve relieved the country of load-shedding.”
“We’ll make electricity reach every house if the Awami League comes to power this time.”
He said Bangladesh had been terrorism-free under the present government. “No terrorist attack has happened unlike during the BNP-Jamaat alliance government.”
Joy also pledged to build the Padma Bridge if the Awami League could form government again.
He listed the successes of the government in different sectors including education, health, agriculture and communications and projected a gloomy future of the country if BNP-Jamaat alliance were voted to power.
The Prime Minister’s son said: “They (BNP-Jamaat alliance) will bring back terrorism and militancy if they come to power. Terrorism, Hawa Bhaban and Monga will stage a comeback.”
He said: “The Leader of the Opposition has said they will set free the convicted war criminals if they come to power. Then war criminals will be ministers again. But we won’t let that happen.”
He urged the people to vote for the Awami League in the next election to ensure the ‘continuity of development’.
Joy’s motorcade left Ganabhaban, Prime Minister’s official residence, for Gopalganj at around 9:30 am. Prime Minister’s cousin Sheikh Helal Uddin, MP, and Sheikh Rehana’s son Redwan Siddiqui Boby are accompanying him.
Joy addressed street rallies at Nimtala, Srinagar and Mawa Ghat in Munsiganj, Shibchar in Madaripur, Bhanga in Faridpur and Muksudpur and Vatiyapara in Gopalganj.
He will spend the night at Gopalganj after paying homage at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s grave.
Joy will visit Bagerhat, Khulna and Jessore on Saturday.
Hundreds of activists of the Awami League and its associate bodies lined up on both sides of the road holding banners and festoons welcoming Joy. He was also showered with flower petals at some places.
Most of the time he responded by waving to the crowd.
