Gulshan, Kalyanpur militants from same group: DMP Commissioner

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Asaduzzaman Mia has informed that the militants killed in Kalyanpur raid and the Gulshan café attackers are from the same group.

On Tuesday afternoon, the DMP chief talked to reporters and briefed about the night-long raid conducted by joint forces in the Kalyanpur No.5 road in the building numbered 53/3.

“In primary investigations, we found that the militants are from the same group as the Gulshan attackers. The same backpacks were recovered in both Gulshan and Kalyanpur,” he said.

He added that the militants killed in Kalyanpur were planning something big like the Gulshan siege.

The DMP commissioner said the type of the attack, age of the militants and outfit were ‘similar’ in both Gulshan and Kalyanpur incidents.

After Monday midnight, law enforcers cordoned a building termed as ‘Jahaj building’, in the Kalyanpur area and started a raid. The militants senses the presence of police in the area and hurled bombs and fired shots on law enforcers from the 5th floor of the building.

Later, armed forces led by SWAT launched an operation titled ‘Storm-26’ and neutralized the militants inside the building. Police informed that 9 militants died in the raid and one was rescued with bullet wounds and sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The DMP chief said that the police forces had asked the militants to surrender using loud speakers. He added that the militants seemed to be highly educated as per their appearance.

“The deceased are aged between 20 to 24. They had black Punjabis and jeans pants as their attires. Excluding 1, all the other had worn sneaker shoes. Other than that, 7 identity cards of two universities were recovered and police are trying to verify if they are real of counterfeits,” Asaduzzaman Mia said.

He added that the owner of the house has been arrested as he did not collect any information of the tenants before renting them the place on June 20.

The DMP commissioner said the militants could not be identified immediately by the law enforcers and added that they are investigating.

“Photographs of the militants will be published on print and social media in order to identify them,” the Dhaka police chief said.
