Election Commission to brief Hasina on smart NID cards

The Election Commission (EC) will brief Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the use and technical aspects of smart National ID cards.

EC Secretary Sirazul Islam, officials of ID registration cell and other relevant officials would meet the prime minister at her office on Sunday with an appraisal of the smart card.

Now the voters have laminated NID cards.

The smart cards will be of international standard and have around 25 security check options in three stages.

“We are at the final stages of preparing smart cards,” Secretary Islam said.

NID wing Director General Brig Gen Sultanuzzaman Md Saleh Uddin said they would distribute the smart cards ‘soon’.

After the current update, an estimated 7.2 million voters will be added to the existing 96.2 million electorates.

Uddin appealed to everyone to provide correct information in order to get flawless ID cards.

The NID cards are now used for getting government and private services.

The citizens will have to pay fees to get new ID cards from Sep 1.

The EC signed an around Tk 8 billion deal with French firm Oberthur Technologies to make and distribute the smart cards.

The voters are supposed to get the smart cards within June, 2016, as per the deal.
