Declare Jaflong river ecologically critical area: HC

HC also asks to remove bridge over Dwaki river in 15 days

The High Court on Wednesday directed the government to declare Dwaki river at Jaflong in Sylhet as ecologically critical area within a month to protect its environment.

Delivering a verdict on a writ petition, the HC directed the authorities to remove within 15 days a bridge and its adjacent road constructed over the river for shifting the excavated stone.

The HC bench of Justice Mirza Hossain Haider and Justice Kazi MD Ejarul Haque Akondo came up with the verdict after hearing the writ petition filed by Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela).

The organisation filed the petition in December last year saying that the stone excavators had illegally constructed the bridge on Dwaki river at Jaflong in Goainghat upazila for shifting excavated stone, which is damaging the environment and ecology in the area.

Bela prayed to the court to remove the bridge and its adjacent road to protect the natural eco system of the river and the livelihood of people living there.

Earlier on December 15 last year, the High Court directed the authorities not to construct any bridge over the river at Jaflong.
