Court grants 5-day remand for Shafik Rehman

A Dhaka court on Saturday granted five-day remand to interrogate journalist Shafik Rehman in a case filed in 2015.
Metropolitan magistrate Mazharul Islam passed the order after DB assistant commissioner Hasan Arafat produced him before before the court and sought seven-day remand.
Shafik’s counsel Sanaullah Mia sought bail and the court rejected it.
Earlier in the morning, plainclothes people claiming them members of detective branch of police arrested Bangladesh Nationalist Party-leaning writer and journalist Shafik Rehman from his Eskaton home in Dhaka on Saturday morning.
Shafik’s wife Taleya Rehman said the people came to their home and took away Shafik at around 8:00am, said BNP chairperson’s press wing member Syrul Kabir Khan.
Later detective branch’s Dhaka south division deputy commissioner Mashrukur Rahman Khaled said Shafik has been arrested in a case filed with Paltan police station over conspiracies to abduct the prime minister’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
At around 11:00am, Taleya came to DB office at Minto Road being informed by DB that Shafik fell ill and he required medicine.
Police received the medicine and did not allow Taleya to meet Shafik despite she waited for long.
Police said Shafik might be produced before court in the afternoon.
