The BNP will organise protest rallies around the country on August 19 in protest at the recently approved National Broadcasting Policy.

The party will also organise silent processions, holding black flags, in the capital and around the country on August 16 to protest against the Israeli attack in Gaza, said a Standing Committee member yesterday, seeking anonymity.

At a meeting of the party’s Standing Committee late last night BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia also decided to visit a number of districts soon to woo people.

The meeting at the chairperson’s Gulshan office also discussed an announcement of a 10-day plan for observing the BNP’s 35th founding anniversary on September 1.

The meeting prioritised issue-based activities to decide on party programmes.

The Standing Committee member said there would a meeting of the 20-party alliance after the committee’s meeting which which would finalise decisions on all the programmes.

At the party meeting, the BNP alleged that the government’s “incompetence, incapability and negligence” had led to the capsizing of the Pinak 6 launch causing the deaths of so many people.

Condemning the launch capsize incident, it also demanded compensation for the victims’ families and called for handing over all bodies immediately to their relatives and identifying all those responsible for the accident and bringing them to justice.

BNP’s acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the remarks while talking to reporters last night after coming out on a break of the Standing Committee meeting.

Speaking about the Tuba Garment crisis, Fakhrul condemned the attacks on the factory workers and

demanded that the workers immediately be paid the wages that they deserve.

Calling for the new broadcast policy to be completely scrapped, the party spokesperson claimed that the move to introduce the policy was part of a conspiracy to establish one-party politics. He also urged that all journalists resist the broadcast policy.

Speaking about the Gaza issue, the BNP leader said 1,800 people have so far been killed in Gaza. He also urged the United Nations, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Arab League to play a greater role in the issue.

The issues were discussed at yesterday’s meeting, where the BNP Standing Committee members gathered to discuss the course of their future programmes.
