BNP leader Qaiyum, 6 others charged for Tavella killing

Police have submitted a charge sheet to a Dhaka court accusing Dhaka city BNP’s joint convener MA Qaiyum and six others in a case filed in connection with the murder of Italian aid worker Tavella Cesare.

The Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police submitted the charge sheet on Monday, said DMP (DB) deputy commissioner Sheikh Nazmul Alam.

The six other accused are Qaiyum’s brother Abdul Matin, Tamzid Ahmed aka Rubel, Russell Chowdhury, Minhazul Arefin aka Bhagne Russel, Sohel Ahmed and Sakhwat Hossain.

The MP (DB) deputy commissioner said that the name of Sohel Ahmed aka Bhangari Sohel was supposed to be dropped from the charge sheet for the lack of his full name and address.
But later his name has been included in the charge sheet, he added.
All of the accused, except Sohel, are BNP activists.
According to police officials, Tamzid, Russell Chowdhury and Minhazul Sakhwat made confessional statement before a court under section 164.
However, Sohel’s family claimed that some people posing as ‘DB police’ picked Sohel up from Maddha Badda in October, 2015 and since then he has been remaining missing.
On 28 September, Italian national Cesare Tavella, 50, an official of the Netherlands-based non-governmental organisation ‘ICCO Cooperation’, was shot to death by some miscreants at the end of road 90 of the diplomatic zone, Gulshan.
