BD set to verify nationalities of those detained in Thailand

Bangladesh will start verifying the nationalities of those kept detained in different detention centres in Thailand from October 28.

“We’ll start verifying the first group on October 28. There’re 30 persons in the first group,” said Secretary (Bilateral, Training and Consular) Mustafa Kamal on Friday.

He said the 118 Bangladeshis are now staying in five to six detention centres, and the Thai authorities have allowed to consular access to 30 people in the first phase.

Earlier, Bangladesh had sought consular access to verify the nationalities of the detainees in Thailand, 118 of whom claimed themselves to be Bangladeshis.

Earlier, the BBC and the BBC Bangla reported that some 130 Bangladesh nationals have been rescued after being abducted and shipped to Thailand to be sold as ‘slaves’.

Later, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali clarified the matter saying that the incident was part of ‘human trafficking’.
