Barisal police official suspended over bribery

Zillur Rahman, deputy commissioner (north) of Barisal Metropolitan Police (BMP, has been suspended on the charge of collecting bribe-fund for promotion of police personnel.

Shobal Kanti Chowdhury, commissioner of BMP, told the Dhaka Tribune about the suspension order made by the Police Headquarters on Wednesday.

In the order, Zillur was attached to Sylhet Metropolitan Police line.

Earlier, ten BMP policemen were suspended for bribe-collection relating to the promotion of some policemen to ASI, Nayek and Habildar posts.

They are assistant Sub-Inspector Anisuzzaman, Assistant Sub-Inspector Manir Hossain, Assistant Sub-Inspector Hanif, Nayek Kabir Hossain, driver Shahidul Islam, Babul Jamaddar, ration store keeper Abbas Uddin, Arifur Rahman, DB constable Tapash Kumar Mandal and driver Dolon Baral.

A three member internal probe committee led by Shoyeb Ahmed, deputy commissioner (headquarters) of BMP, has been formed to investigate into the allegations against the suspended police personnel, said Shobal.

He added that report of this internal probe committee would be submitted soon.

Different sources said recently 800 new posts were sanctioned and approved for BMP by establishment and finance ministry.

On other hand, 230 constables were waiting for promotion to Habildar and Nayek and a huge number of policemen were also waiting for promotion to assistant sub-inspector after passing departmental examination successfully.

So to get the promotion a fund was created collecting per head Tk.30,000 for Nayek and Habildar and Tk 50,000 for ASI post.  More than Tk1 crore was deposited under the fund in a joint bank account.

After the matter was flashed then security cell of Police Headquarters started investigation and called Bablu, body guard of BMP commissioner Zillur Rahman, Naik Kabir and ASI Monir to Dhaka on June 17.

After interrogating them, ASI Anis was also called to Police Headquarters on June 19.

Then, Police Headquarters suspended 10 policemen after finding the truth, in primary investigation, regarding the allegation, sources said.
