Banglalink HQ, regional offices shut down amid protest

Banglalink has shut its headquarters and regional offices across the country in face of demonstration over the termination of an engineer.

Ankit Sureka, assistant manager of Banglalink (PR), told the Dhaka Tribune that the management of the mobile phone operator has shut all regional offices along with its head office in the capital’s Gulshan area around 2pm Sunday.

He said: “The authorities have closed the offices only for today [Sunday].”

However, the customer care centres will remain open, he added.

The row between the management and the employees began on February 11 when the mobile phone authorities sacked an engineer, Shariful Islam, for his involvement in organising the trade union.

Earlier on Thursday night, the employees confined Chief Technical Officer Perihane Elhamy to the headquarters over the row.

She was released nine hours after her confinement when the police and the management assured the employees of looking into the matter.

Ujjal Pal, president of Banglalink Employees’ Union, told the Dhaka Tribune: “We will continue the demonstration until Shariful Islam is reinstated.”
