Arrest warrant for Khaleda, Tarique ordered to appear

A Dhaka court has issued an arrest warrant against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and two others in Zia Charitable Trust and Zia Orphanage Trust graft cases.

Cancelling the time petition filed by Khaleda`s lawyer, the court of Judge Md Abu Ahmed Jomadar of the Special Judge Court-3, set up at Alia Madrasa ground, passed the order on Wednesday morning.

Besides, responding to a plea filed by ACC lawyer, the court has directed BNP senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman, the charge sheeted accused in the Zia orphanage graft case, to appear before it on March 4.

Earlier in the day, Sanaullah Mia, a defence lawyer of Khaleda Zia, filed two time petitions seeking adjournment of the trial proceedings on behalf of Khaleda.

Sanaullah Mia said that the arrest warrant was issued as Khaleda Zia did not appear before the court today on security ground.

After issuing the arrest warrant, the court started deposition of Harun-ur-Rashid, deputy director of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and also plaintiff of the cases.

On January 29, the judge fixed today (February 25) for hearing the two graft cases filed against Khaleda and 8 others and asked the BNP chief to appear before the court.

In that day, the BNP chief skipped the hearing. According to her lawyer she (Khaleda Zia) could not appear before the court as she is ill due to her son’s death and for security reasons.

Later in that day, the court adjourned the hearing in the two graft cases till February 25.

On July 3, 2008, the Anti-Corruption Commission filed a case with Ramna Police Station against six, including Khaleda Zia and her eldest son Tarique Rahman, for allegedly misusing Tk2.1 crore from the Zia Orphanage Trust funds.

On August 8, 2011, the ACC filed another case with Tejgaon Police Station accusing the BNP chief and three others for misappropriating Tk3.15 crore from the Zia Charitable Trust fund.
