Three Bangladeshi construction workers have died after a concrete span had collapsed at the MRT site in Kota Damansara in Malaysia on Monday night.

The deceased were identified as Mohammad Elahi Hossain, 27, Mohamed Faruk Khan and Mohammad Alauddin Mollik.

The body of Mohammad Elahi Hossain was found by the search team at 2.30am while the bodies of Mohamed Faruk Khan and Mohammad Alauddin Mollik were found at 1.35pm, Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (FRD) asst director of operations Mohd Sani Harul said, reports BERNAMA.

“The three bodies were taken to Sungai Buloh Hospital for post-mortem,” he said.

The three Bangladeshi construction workers were buried after a 490 tonne concrete span at the MRT worksite in Kota Damansara collapsed Monday night.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak expressed shock by the incident in his Twitter page and wanted an investigation to start soon.

Meanwhile, construction work at the MRT worksite in Kota Damansara has been temporarily suspended to facilitate an investigation.

MRT Corp chief executive officer Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid said that construction work at other MRT worksites continues as usual.

“We are working with the relevant parties to obtain more information on what caused the concrete span to collapse.

“Although the collapse occurred in a worksite and not a public area, we take it seriously and regret the incident,” he told reporters at the scene before announcing his resignation as CEO at another press conference at 4pm.

Meanwhile, MRT Corp director of Strategic Communications and Public Relations, Amir Mahmood Razak said all eight cables holding concrete were cut off at 8.30am to facilitate the search operation.

He said the Bangladeshi Embassy here had been informed about the incident.

Eye witness Mohd Shajahan, 30, said one of the victims phoned him to bring over some tools just before the incident.

“I was heading towards them when I saw concrete falling on them,” said the Bangladeshi construction worker.

He said during the incident, there were eight Bangladeshi workers in the area including three on top of the concrete structure.
