It urges govt to ensure safe journey for homebound workers
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) on Monday said the owners of almost all the garment factories have disbursed the salaries and allowances to their workers and employees before Eid-ul-Azha.
“Salaries and allowances have been disbursed by almost 100 percent factories ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha,” BGMEA acting president SM Mannan
Kochi told a press conference at the BGMEA conference room.
He mentioned that they had faced some problems in 15-20 factories.
Despite the owners’ willingness to pay, the problems had arisen delaying the disbursement process, he said.
Former BGMEA president Abdus Salam Murshedy and former vice president Siddiqur Rahman were, among others, present at the press conference.
Mannan Kochi expressed satisfaction over what he said payment to the workers. “I thank both the workers and the entrepreneurs.”
He also said over 1000 small and medium factories were brought under close monitoring based on information from various agencies, while they visited some 1,145 factories to ensure smooth disbursement of salaries and allowances.
The BGMEA leaders, however, expressed concern over the safe journey of RMG workers to their respective villages and their safe return.
“We urge the government to strengthen monitoring to ensure smooth journey and stop carrying excessive passengers in buses, trains and launches, especially on roofs, to avert accidents,” the BGMEA acting president said.
Murshedy said there were some problems in few factories, but the problems have already been resolved through initiatives taken by the government and the owners.
“We hope, our workers will celebrate the holy Eid-ul-Azha in a happy mood,” said the former BGMEA chief.
