Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday asked all concerned to work together with sincerity for construction of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in due time.

She said this while presiding over the 3rd meeting of the National Committee on Rooppur Power Plant Project held at her office, PM’s Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad said.

Sheikh Hasina said, the government has already accomplished many works relating to the nuclear power plant including signing of an agreement with Russia last January.

Referring to the development of the power sector by AL-led grand alliance government, she said that the country was in acute power crisis when it came to power in 2009.

The present government has judiciously dealt with the situation by taking various short, medium and long terms project. As a result, present power generation capacity in the country doubled in only four and a half years, she said.

Making the previous BNP-Jamaat and caretaker government responsible for plunging the country into power crisis, she said they had taken no pragmatic step for generating a single unit of power during their seven years regime.

Apart from taking some new decisions, the meeting reviewed the decisions taken in the previous meeting of the national committee and progress of their implementation, Azad said without any elaboration.

As per present schedule, the government is due to launch the ground breaking of the highly sophisticated project next month.

Under the project plan, two units of the plant, once the project is implemented by 2020, will produce 2,000 MW of electricity daily.
