Who is prompting Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus to canvass for a caretaker government, wonders Awami League Advisory Committee member Mohammad Nasim.
he senior Awami League leader said in Dhaka on Friday that Yunus was a respected person and it was out of deference to him that he had helped him in every way to set up Grameen Bank.
But Nasim, at a discussion, regretted Yunus’ remarks in support of a non-party caretaker government. “At whose behest are you saying this?” he asked.
Yunus had said in a press conference on Thursday that there would be no free and fair election without a caretaker government, and that all political must take part in the polls, referring to the approaching national election.
“People will only vote for them who are not in the habit of throwing their weight about,” the Nobel laureate had cautioned.
Responding to the remark, Nasim said that people did not listen to those who did not stand by them.
“You seldom talk about the Liberation War, demand the trial of war criminals or comment on a disaster like the one at Savar (a garment-factory building collapse that killed over 1100 workers). You are never seen in moments of national crises,” he said, in a dig at Yunus.
Nasim also urged Yunus not to do anything that might undermine his own reputation.
He said the government had no desire to harm Grameen Bank and added that Yunus should ensure that he did not fritter away his goodwill.
He reminded the Nobel laureate that people alone would decide how best the country was run and domestic or foreign dictates would be of little consequence.
