BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday urged party leaders and activists to continue movements to restore democracy through the 2023 elections.

He said democracy has been destroyed during AL’s rule.

Fakhrul was addressing the inaugural session of Dinajpur district council of BNP on Dinajpur Institute premises.

The senior BNP leader said the nation is going through a tough time and such a situation occurs whenever AL is in power. “Awami League talks about democracy but does the opposite,” he said.

Autocratic rule is prevailing in the country, he said. Murder, rape, looting and robbery have become common nowadays, he said.

The AL-led government ruined the judicial system, politicised the news media and took the country towards ruination, he said.

“Through the 2023 elections, we want to rebuild Bangladesh, where there will be no such oppression and repression,” he said.

He demanded that the AL step down and hand over power to a neutral government. “The elections should be held under a neutral Election Commission,” he added.

BNP will force the AL government to accept their demands through strong movements, said Fakhrul.

Party senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman spoke at the meeting virtually.

Rezina Islam, convener of the district BNP, chaired the meeting, which was also addressed by Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, member of BNP standing committee; Prof AJM Jahid Hasan, vice president of central BNP; and Asadul Habib Dulu, organising secretary of Rangpur BNP.
