Washington Times’ write-up not Khaleda’s: BNP

Opposition BNP on Monday night claimed once again that party chairperson Khaleda Zia did not send any write-up to The Washington Times requesting the USA to suspend its GSP facility for Bangladesh.

“The Prime Minister in parliament harshly criticised our chairperson regarding the suspension of the GSP facility by the USA. The Prime Minister’s remarks were untrue, indecent and unparliamentarily, and part of their campaign to defame the opposition leader,” said BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

He made the remarks at a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.

Rizvi also claimed that BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has no relation with the much-talked-about article, titled ‘ZIA: The thankless role in saving democracy in Bangladesh’ published in the US-based The Washington Times on January 30 last.

Referring to a news item published on June 29 in US-based Bangla news web portal PBC24.com, he said the news item proved that Khaleda worked for enhancing the GSP facility.

According to the PBC news item, Khaleda requested America not to scrap the GSP facility but to enhance it.

The report said Khaleda while addressing the New Jersey Senate on May 23, 2011 urged the US government to bring the readymade garment under the GSP programme.

“While our chairperson made such a request to the US authorities, how she will further request them to scrap the facility,” Rizvi questioned.

He alleged that having failed to retain the GSP (generalised system of preferences) facility, the government is now spreading propaganda to shift its blame on others and create confusion.

Asked why they did not disown the article after it was published, Rizvi claimed they, at different times and at different TV talk-shows, said it was not written by Khaleda. “The signature used in the article was not Khaleda’s. It’s part of government conspiracy to divert our movement to a different direction and mislead people.”

Replying to another question why they did not protest it, he said they think it is not necessary as their chairperson did not write the article and sign it.

Earlier on June 29, leader of the opposition Khaleda Zia while delivering her speech in parliament on the proposed budget for the new fiscal disowned the article.

Khaleda alleged that the government has launched various propaganda campaigns to confuse people having failed to retain the GSP facility.  “Some people are saying about a write-up published in a foreign newspaper by my name. “I didn’t send any such write-up.”

  1. RESHMA “MIRACLE” or the “HOAX”? COULD THAT HAPPEN WITHOUT HASINA’S CONSENT?

Truth can never remain concealed. Sooner or later it is bound to come out. Foreign media, especially the one supported vigorously the creation of Bangladesh are not the “ENEMIES” of Bangladesh. And they are “NOT TRYING TO SAVE THE WAR CRIMINALS, JOINING WITH BEGUM KHALEDA, THE LEADER OF THE 18 PARTY ALLIANCE”, AFTER RECEIVING HUGE AMOUNT OF MONEY FROM THE VERY RICH JAMAAT”. They MUST not be treated and abused as the political opponents of the ruling party and its communist-apostate allies. BNP leader Mr Ani is right. There should be an impartial inquiry about the “MIRACLE” or the ” HOAX” concerning RESHMA to restore the tarnished image of Bangladesh & its people. And the guilty persons MUST be punished. Most people, home & abroad are asking, “ CAN THIS AMATEURISH HOAX TAKE PLACE WITHOUT A BELEAGUERED, REJECTED, FRIGHTENED , CORRUPT HASINA BEING INVOLVED?
