US ambassador concerned about polls-time violence
‘All parties have been victim to this, including minorities and female candidates’
US Ambassador to Bangladesh Earl R Miller on Thursday said the US is concerned about the high level of campaign violence.
He said: “The United States is concerned about high level campaigning violence over the last two weeks. All parties have been victim to this, including minorities and female candidates.”
The ambassador was speaking after meeting with Chief Election Commission KM Nurul Huda at the commission office in the Agargaon area of Dhaka in the afternoon.
“However opposition candidates have borne the brunt of most of the violence. I appreciate the opportunity to consult with the commission to see what plans it has to create a conducive atmosphere so all Bangladeshis, regardless of their political affiliations, feel safe to go to the polls on Sunday and cast their votes for the candidates of their choice,” he added.
Miller appreciated the fact that over 70% of voters in Bangladesh cast their votes.
“I appreciated the opportunity to consult with the commission to see what plans it has made for a conducive atmosphere which would allow all people of every political affiliation to feel safe to go to the polling stations on election day and cast their votes for their candidates of choice,” he also said.
He wishes for a free, fair, and credible election on Sunday.
