Bangladesh Nationalist Party joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Wednesday alleged that the government is going to hold Union Parishad elections along party line with an ‘evil motive’.
Speaking at a press briefing at a local hotel in Bogra, he, however, said their party will join the UP polls if a proper polls environment is ensured, reports United News of Bangladesh.
‘Though the local body polls were earlier held in a non-political manner, the government is enacting a law to arrange those along party line with an evil motive,’ the BNP leader said.
He further said, ‘We’ve long been calling for holding the national election under a non-party administration. Awami League had taken part in local body polls under our previous governments and we’re also joining so under it. If a proper election atmosphere prevails, we’ll also participate in the upcoming UP polls.’
Rizvi alleged that the government is not allowing their party to hold its political programmes as there is no democracy in the country. ‘We’re some time allowed to hold programme with various conditions. Despite an adverse situation, we’re raising our voice against the government’s misdeeds.’
Replying to a question, Rizvi said there is no division in their party. ‘We’re now reorganising our party to make it stronger.’
He alleged that the ruling party leaders are constantly carrying out propaganda against BNP vice chairman Tarique Rahman involving him in
corruption. ‘But it cannot prove any graft allegation brought against him.’
Referring to a recent clash between traders and students of a madrasah in Brahmanbaria, Rizvi claimed ruling party men at the behest of a minister attacked the Islamic educational institution.
‘But innocent local BNP leaders and activists are being harassed, and efforts are on to implicate them in a case in connection with the incident.’
