“Disrespecting Islam can’t be tolerated,” Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said on Sunday while urging the country’s Aleem and Ulema to put up a strong resistance against the anti-Islamic activities by the BNP-Jamaat alliance. The PM said they are doing this in the name of Islam as their misdeeds are damaging the religion’s image globally.
“Islam is the religion of peace and there is no place for subversive activities, terrorism and militancy in Islam,” said the PM during her speech at the National Imam Conference-2015 marking the 40th founding anniversary of the Islamic Foundation Bangladesh at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC).
The Prime Minister urged the Islamic scholars to come forward to create awareness among religious-minded people against militancy, torching and burning, and thus establish a peaceful and safe Bangladesh for the future generation.
When the government is working for Islam’s welfare, the BNP-Jamaat alliance is creating anarchy in the name of religion using very simple pious person, Hasina said.
About BNP-Jamaat’s hartal and blockade on the day of holy Ed-e Miladunnabi, the Prime Minister said they defamed Islam and the country’s image. “Even they attacked the common Muslims who joined the Biswa Ijtema this year. They have been burning people, including children and expectant mothers to death,” she said adding that this is like genocide.
Referring to her stance in international fora against terrorism and militancy, Hasina said she was highly vocal at a meeting with world leaders in Milan of Italy last year saying there was no relation of Islam with terrorism.
She mentioned that her government has been working to set up at least one modern and model mosque in every upazila and district where there will be an Islamic Foundation Bhaban in the mosque complex alongside separate spaces for women to say their prayers. On addition to that, the government will appoint at least one teacher of religious subject to every school.
